We
strive to equip Hispanic
Americans to be full
participants in the Great
American Experiment of
government by the people, for
the people and of the people.
We hope you will find this
website empowering and that you
decide to join the Republican
National Hispanic Assembly
The
mission of the RNHA of Tennessee is to build
a membership organization to
foster the principles of the
Republican Party in the Hispanic
community; to provide Hispanic
Americans with a forum to play
an influential role in local,
state, and national Party
activities; to increase the
number of Hispanic Republican
elected officials; and to create
and maintain a network of
Hispanic Republican leaders.
Our Nation's First Motto Was "E
Pluribus Unum" – From Many, One.
As
Americans, we celebrate our
diversity while recognizing that
our nation's very identity comes
from the principles that unite
us as one people. Principles
like liberty, equal opportunity,
and the rule of law. Historian
Richard Hofstader has written,
"It has been our fate as a
nation, not to have ideologies
but to be one," and he's exactly
correct. That's what makes
America the best in the world.
Those who love and hate the
United States love and hate us
not so much for what we do but
for who we are. And it is
different being an American, and
one major difference is how you
get to be an American.
You can't become Japanese by
moving to Japan and taking some
oath or by committing yourself
to a set of ideals. A Turk with
great difficulty might immigrate
to Germany and become a citizen,
but he will find himself
described as a Turk living in
Germany, not as a German. But if
a Japanese or a Turk, a Cuban, a
Mexican or a Peruvian comes to
America legally and wants to
become a citizen, they do that
based not on race, creed or
color but by taking an oath and
pledging allegiance to a common
set of principles, speaking a
common language, and respecting
our rule of law.
That's who we are as Americans,
and when we forget that, we run
the risk of undermining our
greatest strength. Some say that
diversity is our greatest
strength. And it is a great
strength, but hardly our
greatest. Jerusalem is diverse.
The Balkans are diverse. Iraq is
diverse. Our greatest strength
is that we have taken all that
magnificent diversity and forged
it into one nation.
To truly appreciate our American
history we must recognize the
contributions of those who have
helped to shape our country.
That's why I was an original
cosponsor of legislation
recognizing September 15 through
October 15 of each year as
Hispanic Heritage Month. It's
important to celebrate the vast
contributions of Hispanic
Americans to the strength and
culture of our nation, our
schools, our communities,
churches, and our neighborhoods.
We are proud this month and
every month to say we are a
nation of immigrants, but even
prouder to say we are all
American.
